The Georgetown Teen Court program just completed its 24th year. Our Teen Court sessions are always on Monday evenings at 6:00 pm, during school months only.
This past 2016-2017 school year we held 105 defendants cases, which resulted in 16 nights of Teen Court. We do two teen court sessions a month and use the Jury Trial format on all our cases. We had 20-24 Teen Attorneys this school year that volunteered for the entire school year. We had on an average of 7 cases heard each night. September 1997 the first trials were held in the 30th District Courtroom. Initially approximately 200 cases were heard annually. Fast forward 20 years and there are approximately 325 cases heard in a year. Court meets on Tuesday nights with the exception of the last Tuesday when the Jr. Bar conducts their business. There is a blend of methods for trials as a result in statute changes. This court hears School Court Cases, those that occurred on campus, and imposes the required Graduated Sanctions. Traffic cases are conducted before a “master jury.” All other cases are heard in our traditional courtroom located in the Wichita County Annex Bldg. The Wichita County Teen Court is administered by the Boys & Girls Clubs of Wichita Falls but functions independently of their governance and finance.
